The subtle racism of Seattle's 'trusted institutions' continues to impact our kids

The increase in physical violence against Asian Americans is not a mysterious aberration. It’s the result of hateful rhetoric from our last President, among others. It’s part of a history of anti-Asian racism and violence that is too often overlooked or minimized. And it’s also being made possible by insensitive, dehumanizing language that has been normalized.

Take this sign, hanging casually in a Swedish Hospital health facility, perpetuating dangerous stereotypes during a time of such specific violence.

We're rushing kids and students back to in-person learning... just in time for state testing?

The Biden administration has decided to go forward with state testing in schools this year.

Nothing besides pressure from a billion-dollar testing industry can be motivating this decision.

We cannot afford to move into next year as if this year hadn’t happened. We cannot afford to snap back to what was, to miss out on the many ways we all learned and grew over the past year.

Is the school district prepared to take the well-being of their workforce seriously?

If the health and well-being of our community is a priority, the district must train staff on anti-bias, restorative discipline practices. And above all, the mental health of our community must be prioritized over any attempts to standardly assess, bridge learning “gaps” and return to status quo.
